Study Spanish abroad programs: Ana Ortega - Head of Studies of don Quijote Seville

"Welcome to Seville. This warm heart of the south of Spain and capital of Andalucia, has an extremely rich history of more than 2500 years, which still continues this day.
The humor and kindness of its people will make you feel at home from the first day. You will live Spanish: enjoy spectacular flamenco shows and get involved in spontaneous concerts on the streets and in bars. Come and experience for yourself the famous Spanish saying "Sevilla tiene un color especial.....".

Ana Ortega
Head of Studies, Seville Partner School

  The City

Much of the history is still reflected in the monuments of Seville (e.g. the Cathedral, the Giralda, the Alcázar, The Torre de Oro and the famous Santa Cruz quarter) and in the traditions of its inhabitants. Probably there are no other people that live and love their traditions as much as the people of Seville: the magical 'Semana Santa' (holy week), the festive 'Feria de Abril', the dramatic Flamenco, or the polemic 'Toros' (bullfights).

Besides the culture and the traditions, Seville is also a modern city, specially since the improvement in infrastructure for EXPO '92 and the recent World Athletics Championships.

The school is located in a magnificent historic building in the city center.
You will savor a concentrated taste of Spain upon entering the school.
The classrooms are very spacious and just like all other don Quijote schools, don Quijote Seville has a secretariat, meeting room and multimedia classroom.

  Celebrations and festivals

In Seville two of the most popular celebrations are the 'Semana Santa' and the 'Feria de abril'.
In 'Semana Santa' (March - April) there is movement of people throughout the region. The 'Cofradías' (Fraternities) and thousands of Sevillians process in penitence through the streets of the city. During the whole week, sanctuaries are visited and the people attend the different masses. A public and multitudinous catechism is performed in the streets around the sacred images of the brotherhoods, whose 'pasos' (floats) represent the distinct stages of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mantillas, clothes worn for the first time, and sounds of the processional march can be heard in all the streets; the bars are filled with people......while the Fraternities carry their floats from their church to the Cathedral.

'La Feria de abril' as indicated takes place in April. Just after 'Semana Santa' , the Sevillians start preparing this fair. There are thousands of individual 'casetas' (tents) competing to obtain a prize for the nicest tent. Decorated with lanterns, paper flowers, light bulbs, photographs, bars, paintings, mirror, lamps and other decorations. This Fair, where the natural beauty of the Sevillian girls and women is enhanced by the typical flamenco dresses, is an ideal place for cordiality and friendship whilst enjoying glasses of 'manzanilla wine' (sherry), some 'tapas' (small andalusian snacks: 'pescaito frito', 'caldito' or 'tortilla de papas'), singing and dancing 'Sevillanas' (a specific version of the flamenco dance). This singing and dancing makes daily problems fade away.

  Our Opinion

Seville is a very complete city, the mixture of its rich history and modernity will add value to your Spanish course. The 'good life' is another of the traditions that the Sevillians like to maintain, as you will see from the many restaurants, bars and terraces that guarantee an entertaining and thrilling nightlife. Seville has an international airport which allows good communication between other Spanish cities and the rest of the world. Also with the high velocity trains it only takes 2 hours to reach the capital of Spain, Madrid.
